Keighley & Worth Valley Railway (Haworth Railway Station), West Yorkshire

Client: Keighley & Worth Valley Railway (Haworth Railway Station)

Keighley & Worth Valley Railway (Haworth Railway Station), based in the heart of West Yorkshire is a famous filming landmark, the most famous of which being The Railway Children.

This unique railway station is still operational and runs heritage steam and diesel trains throughout the year.

The railway’s active steam locomotive engineering building had suffered from wet rot decay as well as woodworm infestation, that needed urgent attention. These defects were believed to have been as a result of water ingress.

Problems Faced By The Client

The engineering building that has been affected is actively used and worked in, therefore our technicians had to co-ordinate the project with the work of the staff, site managers and volunteers, to ensure our works were completed efficiently, and with consideration to the ongoing jobs that were going on in the station.

Due to the fact that the affected building is in use, primarily housing active engineering, there was a lot of heavy machinery, tools and materials obstructing areas of the building where our surveyor suspected the problem may be.

Our surveyor therefore attended the site multiple times to inspect every corner and floorboard of the building to ensure that nothing was missed.

Wet rot and woodworm were found to be present in 3 places on the first floor of the building. One section was in the roof purlins and wall plate, and the other 2 sections were in the upstairs floorboards and joists.

Methods Used

The floor joists, roof rafters and purlins needed propping up, affected wet rot and woodworm-affected timbers were replaced, and our team had to treat the surrounding areas with spray chemicals.

The Victorian floorboards were replaced like for like with specialist boards around two inches thick, suitable for an engineering floor, which also had interwoven steel bands to strengthen the floor itself.

With Health and Safety in the forefront of our minds we had crash decks installed below the floor so that our technicians could work safely on the replacement of the floor.

The affected floorboards were replaced and then sprayed with insecticidal/woodworm chemical treatment to prevent any future emergencies.

Extreme caution needed to be observed whilst working with heights, specialist materials, and crash decks.

Results

Our technicians completed all the work to the highest standard, whilst observing all the Health and Safety considerations.

The woodworm has been eradicated, the timbers affected by wet rot were replaced and the strength and integrity of the historic building brought back to it’s original form, where it can be used for heavy-duty works again.
